Jose Roman was born in Lima, Peru where he obtained his basic medical degree at Cayetano Heredia University. He continued to the Postgraduate program of Gynaecology becoming Chief of Residents in Gynaecology in 1983. He was then awarded a British Council Fellowship and he moved to London where he obtained an MSc degree from London University. After this, he completed 6 years of formal specialized training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in different hospitals in London and the Newcastle Region gaining his Membership of the Royal College (UK) in 1991. He then chose New Zealand as his adoptive country obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand O&G College in 1994. When in New Zealand he was awarded a Fellowship by the New Zealand O&G Society for training in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery or keyhole surgery that he completed at the renowned Memorial Medical Centre in Adelaide in 1995. A further clinical attachment followed at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona (USA) and at the Saint-Luc University Hospital in Brussels (Belgium). After his return to New Zealand he pioneered major gynaecological laparoscopic surgery in the Waikato Region and has obtained arguably one of the largest experiences in advanced laparoscopic surgery in Australasia.

Jose worked as a Consultant Gynaecologist at Waikato Women’s Hospital from 1994 to 2001. During his stay at Waikato Hospital he performed the first total laparoscopic hysterectomy in the Waikato Region and developed the first Office Hysteroscopy Clinic. At that time he was also an Honorary Clinical Lecturer for the University of Auckland and a national examiner for the NZREX clinical registration exam. During his stay at Waikato Hospital he was awarded the Medical Johnson & Johnson Prize for his work in the digital documentation of laparoscopic surgical procedures. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) in 2004.

His special interest is endoscopic surgery or keyhole surgery, which includes laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis and laparoscopic repair of prolapses. He has presented his work in several international meetings in Australia and USA. He has also published his experience in laparoscopic hysterectomies and laparoscopic excision of endometriosis and has developed and presented his surgical technique overseas. Jose is one of a small number of gynaecologists skilled in advanced level 4 laparoscopic techniques which includes total laparoscopic hysterectomies (with laparoscopic vaginal closure), laparoscopic reconstruction of pelvic floor defects or prolapses, laparoscopic colposuspensions for treatment of urinary incontinence, laparoscopic transperitoneal pelvic lymphadenectomies for cancer and laparoscopic excision of severe endometriosis. He has become a member of the American Association of Gynecologic laparoscopists.

He also trained in Office Urodynamics in Houston, Texas and in Christchurch (Continence Society) and has recently introduced in his office a Computerized Urodynamic Unit for the study of pressures of the bladder and the bladder muscle that are indispensable for the correct management of patients with urinary incontinence. He has also become a member of the International Continence Society.

He is also formally trained in Colposcopy and the treatment of abnormal smears and precancerous lesions of the cervix and is a Certified Colposcopist with the C-QuIP program run by the RANZCOG. Jose has accumulated a vast experience of more than 30 years in Gynaecological surgery, including more than 5000 operative laparoscopies and more than 2000 key-hole hysterectomies. He has become a member of The International Academy of Pelvic Surgery.

He now works as a full time private Gynaecologist and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon at Braemar Hospital in Hamilton.
