Operations - Loop Excision abnormal cells and Colposcopy

Colposcopy is the assessment of the cervix in patients who have an abnormal smear or in patients whose cervix looks abnormal

Colposcopy is the assessment of the cervix in patients who have an abnormal smear or in patients whose cervix looks abnormal (even if the smear is reported as normal). An office colposcopical biopsy helps to confirm the diagnosis and to plan surgical treatment.

Loop cervical excision is the conservative surgical treatment of a patient whose colposcopical biopsy revealed pre-cancer. It can be done under local anaesthesia or under general anaesthesia depending on the case. What it is more important loop cervical excision does not affect the ability for achieving a pregnancy, and it can therefore be offered to any patient regardless of age.

A device like a pen with a wire loop at the end is used connected to a electrocautery system. The purpose of this small procedure is to remove only the abnormal cervical cells, leaving behind normal tissue.
